About
Whispers of the Past seeks to educate, inspire, and empower listeners by revealing the hidden histories of St. Eustatius. Our mission is to spotlight the resilience, struggles, and triumphs of women throughout history, particularly those who endured the brutal realities of enslavement. By exploring these narratives, we hope to foster a deeper understanding of the island’s past and its significance within the broader context of colonialism, resistance, and cultural preservation.

Fi de Wit is the host of Whispers of the Past and the Senior Culture Coach of St. Eustatius. With a deep commitment to women’s empowerment and lifting others up, Fi brings a unique perspective shaped by years of experience as an Art Therapist, Holistic Life Coach, and Yoga/Meditation Teacher. She blends creative arts therapy and Traditional Chinese Medicine philosophy to foster meaningful conversations. A lifelong visitor and now a resident of St. Eustatius, Fi channels her love for history and storytelling into every episode, using these tools to inspire learning, healing, and reflection.
What inspired you to start this podcast?
I started this podcast because I wanted to record my godmother, Gay Soutekouw, sharing her incredible knowledge of St. Eustatius. She suggested exploring the island’s history through the lens of the woman, this idea resonated deeply with my soul. I’m passionate about women’s empowerment and storytelling, and during my research, I found a big gap in historical records about women especially in the Dutch Caribbean. This made me even more determined to tell their stories. While applying for funding, I was reading If Women Rose Rooted by Sharon Blackie, and her call to action for women to make a difference wherever they can deeply resonated with me. This podcast is my contribution, and I hope it inspires others and sparks aligned action.
What’s the hardest word or name you’ve had to pronounce on the podcast?
Funny enough, the hardest word for me to pronounce has been "St. Eustatius" itself! I kept getting mixed up between the Dutch and English pronunciations. Eugene and I had to retake the intro so many times—it took us hours and countless takes to finally get it right!
Fav Place / Thing on St Eustatius
My favorite thing about St. Eustatius is the sense of safety I feel, especially as a woman. We’re located close to the equator, so it gets dark early, but I can walk in the dark and feel safe. That’s such a rare feeling, and I’m so grateful for it. I love taking walks with the dogs, looking up at the twinkling stars, and feeling connected to something much bigger than myself.

Evo Terra
I’d say I grew up with podcasting, but I was already 36 when I launched my first podcast back in 2004. At the time, it was the 40th podcast ever. So perhaps it’s better to say that podcasting grew up with me? (I’ll let you do the math to figure out my age.)
I had the privilege of writing Podcasting for Dummies back in 2005. During my tenure in the podosphere, I’ve been the host or co-host of over 20 different podcasts. And counting! Professionally, I’ve either consulted for, edited, or advised on over 700 podcasts. And still counting!
Today I draw from those skills and the 20+ years I’ve been in business operations for digital advertising agencies to run a boutique strategic podcast consultancy, Simpler Media. We’re focused on the unique challenges businesses face in podcasting, both today and tomorrow.
What’s been the most surprising discovery you’ve made while consulting for Whispers of the Past?
Everything has been a discovery, since I didn't know the island existed before this. And I'm a frequent traveler to the Caribbean!
What’s the one piece of advice you give to every podcast team that’s crucial for success?
Podcasts tend to get the audience they deserve. By that I mean that the more effort that goes into the show—at all stages—and the more a show truly understands and delivers what the audience wants, the more the show will resonate with listeners

What makes consulting on this podcast different from other projects you've worked on?
I’m working more personally with the whole team, seeing their faces, not just their audio files. And while all of our company’s shows are interesting, the topic of St. Eustatius is particularly fun, interesting, and inspiring.
What’s your favorite part of working with the podcast crew?
The (almost) all-female team! I love working with so many talented women.

Sarah Braun
I wear many hats, but one of my favorites is as a web designer for projects that are meaningful and bring important stories to life. As a designer, I specialize in working with individuals who are seeking to make a difference in the world and in their communities.
I’m also a women’s health nutritionist and community midwife, passionate about uplifting women’s experiences of well-being and self-growth. What’s the one feature on the website that really brings the podcast to life online?
As a photographer, my favorite aspect of the website is the photography. I love to see the stunning photos of Statia, of course, but the historical photos really bring the story of the island home for me. These photos cause me to contemplate the people in them, imagining their lives and their stories.
What’s the most rewarding part about working on a podcast that blends history and empowerment?
As someone with a background and passion for anthropology and sociology, this is a dream project for me to work on. Additionally, the perspective of telling stories from a woman’s experience is so unique for a historical exploration of this kind, and it aligns with my values which lights me up.

Favourite Art work you created for the Podcast
The artwork for episode 6.
What’s been your favorite design element that captures the essence of St. Eustatius’ history?
One of my favorite design elements that captures the essence of St. Eustatius’ history is the depiction of coins and chains. The gold coins represent the wealth, while the chains reflect the complex history of slavery and economic exchange. Incorporating these elements into design work serves as a poignant reminder of the island's layered past, inviting reflection on its historical significance and the resilience of its people. This imagery connects the rich heritage of St. Eustatius with its present identity.
